Essay 1: Rhetorical Analysis

Write a two- to three-page (500-800 word) rhetorical analysis in which you examine the rhetorical effectiveness of ONE of the following arguments:

“Lifeboat Ethics: The Case Against Aid That Does Harm”
(Writing Arguments, pages 595-602)

OR

“The Obligation to Endure”
(Writing Arguments, pages 604-08)

In your introduction, briefly summarize the argument and present your thesis highlighting three or more rhetorical features of the argument that you find central to its effectiveness or ineffectiveness.

To develop and support your own points, you will need to include textual evidence in the form of examples or short quotations from the argument. Use attributive tags to distinguish your ideas from those of the author. Use MLA documentation to cite points and quotations in your essay and in a Works Cited list at the end.

Think of your rhetorical analysis as a way to shine a spotlight on important aspects of this argument and to make the argument understandable and interesting for your reader.
